LIBERATION | REDEMPTION | DELIBERATION | EMANCIPATION
UKOMBOZI IS A
rallying cry to abolish mass incarceration in all of its forms. Ukombozi is a Swahili word that means liberation. redemption. deliberation. emancipation. We use this as our rallying cry because we believe in transformation and restorative justice as answer to crime and violence instead of a mass incarceration. Liberation Ukombozi was formed in 2019 to bring individuals who have been impacted by mass incarceration and activists together to holistically advocate for criminal justice reform through abolition principles.
Founder and Executive Director Carol Speaks is a dual survivor who has lost her son and grandson to violence and also has a son serving death by incarceration. As a dual survivor, she has channeled her pain into passion as a community organizer working to assist individuals with conflict resolution, access to Naloxone, mental health care services, health care products and violence prevention.
ACTIVIST CORNER
As a activists we use all of our resources to support other organizations whose missions are similar to our own. Recently, along with one of our loved one's in captivity we drafted a bill called The Vulnerable People’s Act which will soon be introduced into policy. Our system is in need of so much reform.
